As WiFi availability becomes a differentiating factor when choosing anything from a cafe to a hotel, Airlines are slowly getting this. American Airlines has announced that they will be launching broadband access in the air. AirCell will be the supplier testing out the high speed broadband connections starting in early 2008 on transcontinental flights, with WiFi being rolled out on domestic flights at a later date.
This high speed internet connection will allow for VPN access through WiFi enabled laptops and PDA devices, and offer a complete scalable solution on American’s Boeing 767-200 aircrafts. Signals sent through the aircrafts cabin will be 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi signals.
